More than just a festival, Europajazz today comes on all year! Europajazz after the season ends in early March after the remaining three of the four seasons of the festival: the Europajazz Regional Round of 2 to 19 March, the Europajazz High School March 22 April 2 and Europajazz Final April 3 to May 9 Here are more than 80 concerts (and many cultural activities in parallel) in 22 cities and 6 aeras including the course content remains true to our online art history: many creations (Sébastien Texier, Alban Darche, Michel Portal, Andy Emler, Michel Edelin), invitations to groups unpublished in France (Kris Defoort, Taylor Ho Bynum), the presence of marked young French musicians (Striking 10, Jean Louis, Dave Golitin, Burno, Trio d'En Bas) and a new wave of European youth talent (Francesco Bearzatti, Lotte Anker, Kris Defoort, Mikko Innanen), not forgetting the iconic figures of jazz history (Liz McComb, Miroslav Vitous, Arild Andersen) and some musicians which marked the festival's history which we can not do without (Andy Emler, Daunik Lazro, Tony Malaby, Barre Phillips, Barry Guy, Lubat Bernard, Michel Portal, Sylvain Luc ...)!

Paul Motian, Chris Potter and Jason Moran: Lost in a Dream - released March 9th

In February 2009, Paul Motian convened this trio for a special project at New York’s Village Vanguard. From a week of concert recordings, Motian and producer Manfred Eicher subsequently selected the material presented on Lost In A Dream. The album puts an emphasis on balladry, using ballads as vehicles for profound soloing and group playing. In these touching performances of Paul’s songs, increasingly open to improvisational intervention, we get to learn more of the specific capacities of the featured musicians - and of the potential of this combination of players.

Amongst the very first artists to appear on ECM, with Paul Bley’s trio and then with Keith Jarrett’s "American Quartet", Paul Motian’s career as a leader was begun at the label. Conception Vessel was soon followed by other important musical statements including Tribute, Dance, Le Voyage, Psalm and It Should Have Happened A Long Time Ago. His 21st century output for ECM includes two albums with his trio with Bill Frisell and Joe Lovano, as well as Garden of Eden with the Paul Motian Band. He can also be heard on Enrico Rava’s Tati and New York Days and discs with Marilyn Crispell and Anat Fort.

Ralph Towner and Paolo Fresu: Chiaroscuro – released: March 16th

American master guitarist Ralph Towner may collaborate rarely, but his choices in partners have always been beyond astute. For this exciting new duo, of unusual, yet highly attractive instrumentation, he introduces a new partner in the form of Italian trumpet star Paolo Fresu whose remarkably pure and elegant tone is reminiscent of early Miles Davis. Towner’s compositions offer continually changing landscapes for Fresu’s horn to grace, in poetic and lyrical pieces which feature gradations of light and shade, of sound and shadows. Chiaroscuro introduces a new duo and a rare instrumental combination - trumpet and acoustic guitar. The repertoire: a program of old and new Ralph Towner compositions and duo improvisations, plus an old Miles Davis favorite, its presence a key to the musical priorities at work here.

The album was recorded in October 2008 in Udine, but the story of the Towner/Fresu alliance really begins further South, at a festival in Sardinia, 15 years ago. Towner had been commissioned to write music for a local ensemble. Fresu was its trumpeter. "I didn’t know him at all then," Ralph recalls, "but from the very first phrase that he played, I thought: 'This guy really understands melodies!' And I thought there and then that we should do some more work together."

The composition played that night, "Punta Giara", resurfaces here in rearranged form, along with pieces shaped especially for this album, including the title track, a study in strong contrasts. The atmospheric "Sacred Place", heard in two versions, and "Doubled Up" bring Towner’s new baritone guitar to the fore. Tuned a fifth below his classical concert guitar it allows him new flexibility in the low range, and the freedom to be, effectively, his own bassist on the clever “Doubled Up”, the most overtly jazz-like of the new tunes. "'Doubled up' has many meanings, of course, including doubled up with laughter. Here the theme is sequenced, so to speak, the events happen twice, each theme 'doubled'’ by the two players."

After three wonderful trio albums Gustavsen branches off in new directions adding two players familiar to ECM listeners – bassist Mats Eilertsen and saxophonist Tore Brunborg – and introducing the blues-inflected voice of Kristin Asbjørnsen on Tord's gorgeous settings of the poetry of W.H. Auden.

• RIP Patte' Williams - November. 21, 1945 to March 8, 2010. Phoenix's first lady of soul, Patte' Williams (AKA Patti Williams) passed away Saturday, March 8th while recuperating in the hospital from surgery a few days before. She was 64. Though barely known outside the Phoenix area, and terribly under-recorded, Patte' Williams was considered by many to be Phoenix's top female soul singer. She possessed a powerful, gospel inflected singing voice that was often compared to that of Aretha Franklin. During the seventies she released a wonderful single called "One Time Around Kind Of Thing" and had an acting part in the Rudy Ray Moore Movie Human Tornado. She performed regularly in Phoenix and California, and was also very active in the church community. She was a beautiful woman with kind word and a smile for everyone. She will be greatly missed. • Rhythm Room All-Stars appear Friday and Saturday at the Rhythm Room! The Rhythm Room All-Stars return to their home base on Friday and Saturday, March 12th and 13th, for a weekend of house rockin' and blues shoutin'. The Rhythm Room All-Stars consist of Big Pete Pearson, Bob Corritore, Chris James, Patrick Rynn, and Brian Fahey. This weekend, special guest Dave Riley will stop in to do a guest set each night. Doors are at 8pm, with a 9pm showtime. The Rhythm Room is located at 1019 E. Indian School Rd., Phoenix, AZ. 85257.
• Dave Riley & Bob Corritore European interviews! Two prominent European music magazines have recently published interviews that were conducted last November during the Lucerne Blues Festival. Marino Grande, of Italy's presigious blues magazine Il Blues met with both Dave Riley and Bob Corritore for seperate interviews which are now included in the latest issue. You can see these interviews by clicking here. Marco Piazzalonga of Switzerland's Jazz 'N More Magazine also did a Bob Corritore interview which is out in the current issue of that magazine. • Rhythm Room All-Stars activities. The Rhythm Room All-Stars have been actively involved in various musical projects and activities. Chris James and Patrick Rynn are working on the finishing touches of their sophomore release on the Earwig label. The new CD is called Gonna Boogie Anyway. Chris and Patrick will also participate in the 2010 Spring Harp Festival in San Diego on April 3rd, 21010 (click here for more information). Chris has also produced a forthcoming CD by harmonica player Rob Stone (Chris' long time associate). Patrick Rynn, who was recently nominated for a BMA in the bass player category, has a interview feature in the latest issue of Big City Blues. Brian Fahey is on the cover of the most recent issue of Belgium's Back To The Roots Magazine. Brian will also participate in a two week Paladins reunion tour in Europe in early May. Bob Corritore is working on his next album called Harmonica Blues with an amazing array of special guests (more on this shortly!). Big Pete Pearson is recovering nicely from knee replacement surgery and after a week was already back to performing! Big Pete Pearson was recently featured on Blues Quest syndicated Blues show with host Mike Sanders (Click here to enjoy the podcast). Thanks for the attention received by the Rhythm Room All-Stars, both as a band and individually. Each member of this group brings allot to the table.
• Mississippi Valley Blues Festival lineup announced! Each year the Mississippi Valley Blues Society host a top notch, 3 day blues festival during the 4th of July weekend at beautiful LeClaire Park in Davenport, Iowa. This Festival is considered one of the best blues gatherings in the country and each year has a stellar lineup. This year the 26th annual IH Mississippi Valley Blues Festival lineup includes Li’l Ed and the Blues Imperials, Ana Popovic, Zac Harmon, Vasti Jackson, Rosie Ledet, Ruthie Foster, Billy Branch and the Sons of the Blues, Shawn Kellerman, Lucky Peterson, The Legendary Blues Cruise Revue featuring Tommy Castro and Debbie Davies, Dave Riley and Bob Corritore, The Nighthawks with Hubert Sumlin, and a tribute to descendants of blues legends, featuring Mud Morganfield, Bernard Allison, Little Pink Anderson, Caroline Shines, Lurrie Bell, and Shirley King. Al Jarreau's distinctive voice has enthralled fans for more than 30 years. His passion, emotional honesty and astonishing sound have contributed mightily to the popularity jazz vocals enjoy today. Native New Yorker Patti Austin made her professional debut at the Apollo Theater when she was 5 years old. Quincy Jones and Dinah Washington have proclaimed themselves her Godparents. She's had over twenty songs on the Billboard charts. She has sung duets with George Benson, Michael Jackson, Luther Vandross. In 2008, fifty-three years after getting her first record contract, Patti Austin was awarded her first Grammy, winning Best Jazz Vocal Album for Avant Gershwin at the 50th annual Grammy Awards.
